Asbestos

Asbestos

If inhaled, asbestos fibres have the potential to cause respiratory problems, lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.  Generally, if asbestos in buildings is left undisturbed, there is no risk to health.  However, a significant hazard is created if asbestos material is altered, cut, drilled, abraded or damaged in such a way as to release asbestos fibres into the air.

Fibre cement products in use before 1987 may contain asbestos.  Similar products that are sold today do not contain any asbestos.

People do not need a licence to handle asbestos, however asbestos material must be handled and disposed of in accordance with the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992 and WorkSafe requirements.  WorkSafe (Department of Consumer & Employment Protection) can be contacted on 9327 8777.

The transport of some asbestos may require a permit from the Department of Environment & Conservation (DEC).  The DEC can be contacted on (08) 6364 6500.

Asbestos cement products must be removed with minimal breakage, 2 –3 sheets stacked on polythene sheeting and sealed for disposal.  Asbestos can only be disposed of at approved waste disposal facilities.  For a list of approved sites, please contact the DEC on (08) 63646500.  Please contact the approved asbestos disposal sites to confirm your visit and other conditions of disposal.  Some sites require 24 hours notice before arrival.

The Town of Victoria Park hold an Asbestos & Poisons Disposal Day twice a year.  Residents and owners of properties in the Town can bring a limited amount of wrapped asbestos material, poisons and chemicals to the Town's depot site and we will dispose of it for you, free of charge.  For further information, please contact the Town of Victoria Park Waste Management Services on 9461 7552.

Please contact Council’s Environmental Health Services on 9311 8111 for further information on asbestos.  Information is also available from WorkSafe WA, go towww.safetyline.wa.gov.au and the Department of Environment & Conservation, go towww.environment.wa.gov.au.
