Social Media Changed My Life!

Everybody’s heard of Facebook these days, but not everybody knows what it is, or even likes it. Social media consultant Amanda Kendle, on the other hand, can’t imagine living without Facebook, Twitter, or blogs – she’s a social media addict.

Come along to the Victoria Park Library to hear Amanda explain how she became involved in social media, why she loves Facebook and why you can too, what she blogs about and what, indeed, a blog is, and why some people might call her a Twit.

Nearly half the population struggles without the literacy skills to meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work. There are 46% of Australians who can't read newspapers; follow a recipe; make sense of timetables, or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle.

Australian libraries and library associations are behind a campaign to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading, linking together all the great things that are already happening around books, reading and literacy, and giving them an extra boost, with inspirational programs and events taking place across the country.

Libraries will be partnering with government, the media, writers, schools, publishers, booksellers, employers, child care providers, health professionals and a whole host of other organisations that share our passion for reading.

The National Year of Reading 2012 is about children learning to read and keen readers finding new sources of inspiration. It's about supporting reading initiatives while respecting the oral tradition of storytelling. It's about helping people discover and rediscover the magic of books. And most of all, it's about Australians becoming a nation of readers.

Nearly half our population can't read with any fluency. It's a shameful and worrying statistic. Three goals have been identified which will help turn Australia into a nation of readers and encourage a reading culture in every home:

For all Australians to understand the benefits of reading as a life skill and a catalyst for well-being;

To promote a reading culture in every home; and

To establish an aspirational goal for families, of parents and caregivers sharing books with their children every day.

2012 will see a whole heap of amazing, fun, reading activities taking place around Australia and online, so people of all ages, from different backgrounds, can discover and rediscover the joy of reading.

The National Year of Reading 2012 is a collaborative project joining public libraries, government, community groups, media and commercial partners, and of course the public. As well as creating specific new campaigns for the National Year of Reading, we'll be using our joint efforts to bring together and showcase the wonderful projects and organisations across Australia which already exist to promote reading and literacy.

The Town of Victoria Park Library will be participating in the National Year of Reading from 14 February 2012.

Book of the Month

“To be sung underwater” by Tom McNeal

 “Judith - TV editor, wife and mother - has just two secrets, but they are about to come together in a way that threatens to dismantle her whole carefully planned life. First, there is Willy, the sweet and funny boy with whom she had a passionate summer romance before going away to college, and whom she promised to marry. And two decades later there is Edie Winks, the false identity she chooses when she rents a space to store the vestiges of her teenage life. While on the surface her adult life seems perfect, she suspects her husband is unfaithful, and she's troubled by the way her daughter is growing up. As her world unravels, Judith uses Edie as a way of going back to her past, both to find Willy and the girl she was. McNeal's study of a girl in love and of a woman trying to find her way is beautifully written, taking on the question "what if . . ." in an intriguing way. Judith and Willy are never less than engrossing. Some won't like the ending, but the journey there is nothing less than wonderful”.
