2010 Local History Photo Awards

Entries are invited for the 2010 Local History Photo Awards. The Photo Awards are designed to encourage members of the community to enter photographs representing a photographic record of the Town of Victoria Park. We are interested in the early development, as well as any current day photos you may have in your private collections.

First Prize of $400 sponsored by The Park Centre,

Runner Up prize of $150

The Photo Awards are offered in four categories:

1. 1980 up to 2008

2. 1951 up to 1979

3. Pre-1950

4. Photo Study

The competition closes 16 April 2010

Are You Looking For Ancestors?

Ancestry.com library edition is now available online at Victoria Park Library.

Explore your family history through Australian and overseas historical records, including census records, birth, marriage and death records, settler, convict and immigrant lists, directories and newspaper obituaries.  Photos, maps, and historical publications are also available.

You will need to book an internet session and follow the link from the Library Homepage. Open “Databases” on the left hand side and click on the Ancestry link.

This service is only available from the public terminals within the library.


Cybersmart Guide for Families

Children can use the internet for many reasons. These could include to:

- learn skills

- find assistance with school assignments

- gain knowledge

- keep in touch with friends

Knowing how to use the internet safely is essential to having a positive online experience. For parents and their children, knowing how to apply these skills in a library environment is just as important as it is in the home, school and internet café.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) produced the Cybersmart guide for families, which is available free at the Library. The guide aims to provide practical advice and information on safe internet use.

Online Learning Service – Yourtutor

Yourtutor is an online learning service that connects students via the internet to qualified, expert tutors for individual assistance with homework, assignments, exam preparation and study questions. Students using instant messaging to ‘chat’ to tutors together with the interactive whiteboard, file sharing tool, and web browsing tools.

Students in year 4-12 can connect instantly to tutors Monday to Friday from 4pm to 8pm. Subject support is available in Math, Science, English, Assignment Research and Study Skills. Help is one to one, secure anonymous, and FREE to all library members!


Children Database – TumbleBooks

TumbleBooks introduces young children to the joys of reading with animation, sound and interactive story books and puzzles.

What does TumbleBooks offer?

Story Books – allows children to sit back and listen or read along to entertaining and amusing picture books. Children can read at home and also at their own speed.

There are hundreds of titles to choose from. Each book lists the title, author, brief description, recommended reading level and book reviews.

Jigsaw Puzzle – word games and memory challenges that are interactive, fun to play and will help to instil confidence in children’s game and puzzle skills.

Language Learning – e-books for those learning a second language in French, English or Spanish.

Other features include the ability for children to save their favourite titles and puzzles in their own playlist.

Tumblebook Index – provides a complete list of all titles available or you can search by keyword for a title.

How to Access – All you need is a Library card. Go towww.vicpark.ws/library > Databases > scroll to and click on TumbleBooks and enter you Library card number. Enjoy!
