 Are You Looking For Ancestors?

Family History Online

Ancestry.com library edition is now available online at Victoria Park Library. Explore your family history through Australian and overseas historical records, including census records, birth, marriage and death records, settler, convict and immigrant lists, directories and newspaper obituaries.  Photos, maps, and historical publications are also available.

This service is only available from the public terminals within the library.

You will need to book an internet session and follow the link from the Library Homepage. Open “Databases" on the left hand side and click on the Ancestry link.


Searching is easy and if you need help you can open the 'Search Tips’ for a brief introduction and tips for effective searching

Acclaimed journalist and author whose book 'Broken Lives' published in 1998 led to the re-opening of the cases against John Button, serving a lengthy prison term for the manslaughter of his girlfriend and Darryl Beamish, convicted of the murder of former Melbourne
socialite Jillian Brewer.

Both men subsequently had their sentences quashed.

Estelle’s second book 'End of Innocence' was published in 2007.

This book goes  behind the scenes and tells the story of how she came to write 'Broken Lives', detailing the investigation, the police dealing with the case, the suspects and the families involved.

Estelle was awarded the prestigious Walkley Award for contribution to journalism in 2001 and the
Medal of the Order of Australia in 2002.


 Collecting your Reservations

 

From 1 February Victoria Park Library is introducing self collection of reservations.

Once you have collected your reservations please bring them to the desk so they can be issued to your library card as normal.

Please note the library card used to reserve items must be the card used to collect the items.

A self run Writers’ Group meets at the Victoria Park Library on the first Wednesday of
each month at 6pm.

The first meeting for 2010 will take place on Wednesday 3 February.

 New Format for Bookworms Club

The Bookworms club is currently being revamped!  Along with a new name, the club will take on a new format by giving children aged 6-12 years the
opportunity to complete 10 library challenges. 
Completing all 10 challenges brings children a special prize.

Not only that, the club will also allow children to be involved in number of special events held throughout the year like:

Meet an Author sessions
Craft workshops
Film Screenings
Drama Workshops and much more!

If you have a child aged 6-12 years don’t let them miss out on this great opportunity!
